I wouldnt go with an adapter plate. The transmissions they put in the rangers really weren't, well, barely tough enough for the V6. I bought the 5.0 and AOD out of a 91 mustang gt. Then all the gadgets to make it a cobra off of a 93 stang. Narrowing a 9" to put under it as well. Trying to keep the appearence stock. Sleeper like. If you could get ahold of a newer V6, out of like an F-150, you would probly be way better powered then you are now. Would only have to worry about the transmission and transfer case, long as you're running an auto. My ranger's a 2wd, w/ a two piece drive shaft. Thinking of changing it to a one piece....
I have never own'd a 2.9, however... The 5.0 is a good swap! My ranger ran 141k miles befor the 3.0 blew a head gasket and hydro'd the motor. Its a 1991 X-cab 2wd. 5.0 cobra going into it now! How many miles you get out of the 2.9?
