I think I would start with the fuel filters and fuel pressure regulators. I know my chev truck was acting funny and I changed the regulator and it fixed the problem
I guess I would have to say the early 50's mopars actually started the muscle car era, with the introduction of the hemi. Even in the big boats they put them in they still were really fast.

We were talking paint one day and he mentioned to me how his '60 something Nova was painted with a Ford paint. Well, I could not resist, but I looked at him and said "and I bet that Ford paint makes that Chevy run better". He just dropped his head and we laughed. We have always battled back and forth about Ford vs Chevy.
