I guess you could weld a plate over it, But remember thatif the rust isn't taken care off it will come right back thru and continue to eat away at the frame. I asked around and talked with a guy who bought one two years ago and the car lot had bondo-ed the frame, painted ovr it and sold it. after the first winter the bondo fell out and the frame had to be removed from the truck for repair, but the guy just junked the thing and made it into a off road buggie. Some of these where made in Japan and some of the were made in Kentucky and he said that this problem is a ocean salt issue and it happens mostly on the imported ones. The American built ones are damaged from road salts.

Okay, After looking at your photo, this isn't the same place that my wife's truck is rusting out, BUT the good news here I can help you with this one.
Do you have use of a welder, grinder and about two hours. I had this problem on antoher truck. The area where your frame is rusted out is where the outer frame and a cross member meet. What you are looking at inside of the rust hole is the cross member. I would take a die grinder and cut out the rusted part (just the bottome half, cut a piece of metal the same size of the hole and thickness of the frame metal. and drill three or four hole in it for back welding.
clean as much of the old rust off of the cross member and paint it with weldable primer, put in your plate and weld it.
NOTE please clear out behind where your welding, (any brake lines, fuel line or electrical wires) so that the welding heat doesn't get to them and do damage. You can use a heat shield or loosen them so you can get them away from the heat. DO Not try to weld it in one try. take you time and weld short bursts, you can still warp a frame if the heat gets too high. 110 migs are great for this.
Weld up the plug holes then the outer patch. grinde off excess weld, paint and reassemble. any more question please write back.

Hi Dazed,
My wife has a 94 nissan 4x4 SE6 truck with the same problem with rust, Let me know if you get any info regarding the fix. Her truck started in the right rear quarter panel under the chrome trim. I'm a mechanic and have been watching "Trucks" to learn how. who said you can't teach an old dog new tricks! LOL
