it may sound stupid but try going to a synthed. oil it will also help with mpg
and for the price of the up grade you can put a splash tray in the oil pan that will help a little.

for the cheap upgrades on that 89 chev.. do a air filter. a throttle body spacer and possibly get rid of the a/c pump casue that sucker just eats power. all you gotta do is unplug it and remove it and get a belt for a non a/c engine. you will prob gain a bit of horsepower that way
