Next, lose some of the antifreeze go with a higher water ratio, then I would check my timing, if that dont help, you might have some valve adjustmtnet issues. If that is not it you might have some clogs in the block/water jackets... You might try ...

try running at 6 degrees instead of 9 and ad water wetter it will run your car 30 degrees cooler and change thermostat to 180 or 195 and run the car with the radiator cap off if there is a head gasket leak the gasses will cause the water to look l...

check pressure on cool system, check to make sure water pump and pulley are rite for that year.difference in volume gpm.if pressure bleeds off to fast a small hole in cooling system.

hey daniel it sounds like a flow problem have you used bars leek or some kind of leek sealer by chance some times the heater core plugs up and water chaneles do too from using leek sealers check for flow at idle if there is no flow at idle speed c...

It has a pull fan and there's plenty of air flow when the car is sitting still. The water pump is the stock pump for the car. I was looking at a Pontiac book at the book store for ideas. I found out that the water pump assembly needs a Divider pla...

Daniel, Did you install a "push" fan or a "pull" fan? It may be backwards and doesn't flow air through the radiator when the car is sitting still. Is the water pump a reverse flow?

That is very possible Daniel, esp if this chrome pulley is very large in diameter, slowing the pump down. I would try Year One mainly due to the fact that it would be a new pulley, so it wont be bent and wobbly. Or check with your local salvage ya...

I've tested the thermostat in a pot of water with a thermometer and it opened at 160 degrees.the upper radiator hose Is getting hot by 180 Degrees. I'll try to find a combustion leak tester and see if there is any exhaust gases in my cooling syste...

Daniel, So it is not overheating off idle? Is the upper radiator hose getting hot as the engine warms up? I hate to say it but it sounds like to me that you might have either a blown head gasket or a cracked cylinder head. After it has cooled off,...

I've checked the timing a few times and it's at 9 degrees advanced at idle. which is what the Chilton book has in it. the heater core isn't connected right now. I'll try to find a combustion leak tester and see if there is any exhaust gases in my ...

Dan, A couple of things you might want to look at would be if the timing is advanced too far. That can cause overheat at idle, the other may be a bad head gasket. I've also seen a clogged heater core cause an engine to overheat due to restricted ...

Hi Daniel,
There are lots of good tricks for cooling, but two big ones...Have you checked the clrearance between the pump's impellor blades and the block? This can be adjusted to improve efficiency. I'd also suggest a fan shroud if you don't already have one. If you do, then ensure that it's sealed so thjat the only air coming into the engine compartment is coming in through the radiator. Seal the shroud in other words. You can get rubber plumbing insulation from Lowe's or Home Depot and use it to fill any cracks that let air in around the shroud. Two simple, basic things that will improve the cooling efficiency of your motor. Pontiacs are famous for their heating issues. You might want to check the forums at performanceyears.com also. TONS of useful Pontiac specific help there. Here's a link to their cooing forum. Check it out! http://forums.performanceyears.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=420

I remeber when those birds came out. Being a lil bit different than most ( does it show? :-) ) I wanted one with the HO OHC 6. For some reason I just liked that OHC 6. Probably because it had more power than my car at the time..61 Catalina bubbletop. It started as a bottom of the line 389...215 horsepower! The HO OHC 6 had 235 hp. Anywho......sure wish I had that ole Poncho back. Good luck on your bird. Norm

Thanks, and I'm considering black, or something along the lines of tahoe turquoise, or a very deep blue. For the next few years though, it's staying Bruins Blue haha.
