I am impressed with what ford has done also.They were the only one of the big three not to get bailed out,cut pay to exec's first, then went to the unions a worked out a deal with them...either take a pay cut or we cant survive...
Small block, thats what i run in Nasty, check her out. We just put the motor out of the orange truck in her and gave her brand new boggers and rims. Shes mean now. I don't have any new pictures or videos of her up yet but i will. Just keep in touch.
if it was me i would go with the big block and get rid of the dana 44 and go to the dana 60 if your going to be playing in the nud very much and if going to run big tires it hard to beat the dana 60 there hell lot stronger and they look better und...

there is a straight axle conversion but you need to find a front axle...cant remember the sight but you can google straight axle conversion
i would check the electrical system and make sure that the relay is good and make sure there is not a grounding problem in the wiring to the pump besides using soap and water
i would like to see them do a build on a first generation explorer and maybe swap in a bbf and a straight axle. Make it street legal running 38's or better but make it a multi purpose,mud,rock,sand, and dune type unit.

Has anyone done it and how bad or easy is it to do cuz i am also gonna be doing a motor swap be it a sbf or a bbf i have both but i am just trying to decide which way to go a straight axle swap or stick with a ttb but switch it to a dana 44
