Profile Information

First Name
Andy

My name is Andy Matthews. I have a 1984 Chevy S-10 4x4 truck that I’m trying to make it onto a Diesel Dually 4x4 S-10.
The first thing I want to do is to work on the performance. I want to drop a diesel engine (a 3.9 liter Cummins or a 2.2 liter Isuzu) in and put a K&N air filter and a Flowmaster dual exhaust system on. I also want to replace and upgrade leaf springs, shocks, and sway bars. I need to upgrade the back axle and front spindles from a five lug to an eight lug, so I can put dually rims on. I want to put Bear brakes on, but I need the upgraded axle and spindles.
The second thing I want to work on is the exterior. To make the truck into a dually, I need dually fenders and rims. When I got the truck, it didn’t have much of a face. So I want to get a stylin’ grill, a front bumper with a winch, and brush guard. On the back of the truck, I want to modify the back lights, replace the back bumper so I can put a Reese hitch on and replace the tailgate with a smooth California combo with a license box. I also want to put on a blue underbody LED kit on the truck. I need to get the front fenders replace or rolled out so I can paint the truck black with blue flames coming up from the undercarriage. There are some little things I want to put on the truck as well, like smoke window visors, window glass scapes (old Dixie), an air force hood guard, chrome gas tank door cover, Herculiner bed liner, and 3-d effect letters and numbers and I am going to make the tonneau cover that is going on the bed of the truck.
The third part is a redo of the interior. The person that had the truck before me ripped out the carpet and radio. I want to rip out the old dashboard and put an upgraded dashboard (from a 2001 s-10 with a flamed dash cover), so I can get the gages I want (dancing flame) into the 1984 s-10. I also want put in the mini eagle seats, Sony xplod speakers, custom billet mirror (flamed), and a cb radio. I already have the radio that I want to put in. I also want to put a big rig air horn and a Dixie air horn on the truck.
Here are some pictures of the truck. I already have started tearing the truck apart.

Thank you,
D. Andy Matthews

The sound, well, OK. I grew up with knowing Diesels were in OTR trucks.
The new ideas as diesels in cars, small trucks are different.
As far as pulling a trailer, I pull a 29' Jayco travel trailer as well asmy 20' car trailer with a 4500 lb load with a 460 F350 Ford Dually. My stepson pulls a 18' car trailer, loaded, with a 302 Ford F150.

if miles per gallon is the most important reason for the changeover
I'd personally' check the costs to do the change. You could get a wrecked Blazer cheap from Craigslist and it would have all the parts you would need. Diesels need expensive parts plus the initial purchase of a diesel engine and trans.
On a different note, is the old engine a 2.8 or a 4.3 Liter engine ?

PMGs?? I'm dumb, what are PMGs ?

That sucks. But keep it under a tarp until you get the bucks to get moving again. Have you sold off the original engine, trans, & rear ? Are you planning on keeping it 4x4? What do you plan on for a front axle? or rear axle? For simplicity, how about going with pre 85 Toyota solid axles or those from a full size truck. I think?? that your 4x4 is a solid mount center & independant axles. I am probably wrong. But!
As far as 'dually' fenders, how about the fenders from a step side Chevy. They unbolt and would work for the outside part. Are you going diesel because of the low end torque ? Have you considered using a 350 or 400CI SBC ? It will be easier & cheaper than going diesel. It's your truck, do it as you see fit & have the money.

Andy,
I talked to my friend yesterday. He thinks your project is great. He has heard of guys putting that 3.9 in dodge Dakotas. That cummins engine is a 4cyl version of the 5.9 you find in full size trucks. He even said the internals are basically the same. He also said you can get about any part you want from Cummins to make it run real good too. He said get the CPL number off the front of the engine and contact them with that. About contacting him though, he said he is too busy right now. But I am sure there are many other guys out there that know those diesels as well as he does out there that are willing to help

Sorry for the late reply. Was working (for months) on putting 4:88 Yukon Gears in my truck. What a nightmare that was. But thankfully I had the right mechanic to do the job. And he was great!!! All is well with my toy now. More power(thank god) and better gas mileage!!! Bonus!!!

Try "google" ask for 17" wheels (or rims) There should be a few. As for cheap? well, it depends on what type wheels you are looking for. Have you looked at "craigslist.com" ? There should be someone in KY with 2 or 3. Most wheel sets get a right front that gets 'Gouged'
