Kingman Kid has a very good point, these are all good ideas to do if infact the engine has been sittin a long while without being started (to preserve it from being damage by bad gas, or oil etc.) I would take his advice.
Also, try asking your fr...
I know what u mean. Im sure u looked thru my pics and seen how mine started. it was decent but far from perfect. It was mostly original paint. I do paint and body so taking care of mine will be no biggie. Im gonna keep mine red, but not stock red. Either going with Red Mica Pearl from Lexus or Outrageous Brand Garnet Red which is a strong pearl that changes to red, orange, gold, and a lil hint of green. Keep me posted on the build man. later
no not 22's, in the pic those are actually 24s. I know the "purests" or normal person will hate that i did it, but if everyones car was the same, the car scene would be boring. My wheels do the same thing as yours or anyone else's do, go forwards, backwards, left and right, and even sideways, mine are just bigger. Your car looks very nice by the way.
Hey Aaron,
Since youre on a budget your best bet right now is to READ....A LOT. Id start with "How to rebuild your small block Chevy" by David Vizard. He's currently a contributing writer at Popular Hot Rodding in addition to teaching engine theory at a college in NC somewhere. Another good source for info is the Car Craft and Chevy Hi Performance websites. They have a lot of good tech info that will not only give you how-tos on specific projects but will help you work out a parts combo thatll make power and keep you legal. Id start by pitching everything but the shortblock. Your heads are 25yrs old and way outdated. They didnt make that much power when new and there are newer and better designs today that will fit your needs for a reasonable price. Edelbrock also makes a Performer intake for your application at a reasonable price so theres no reason to keep your GM manifold either. This upgrade is probly worth 15HP on a stock engine and will b good for even more when combined with any other upgrades u make. Edelbrock also makes a set of smog legal headers that are a direct replacement for your stock manifolds. Crane Cams has a number of smog-legal grinds that have CARB EO exemptions and will work with your OE electronics. Since youre staying with the 305 and computer controlled carb you should b able to simply have a new PROM chip burned for your engine computer and b good to go. I hit the books pretty hard when my son and I were working out the combo for his 86 Z28 so if u have a problem u cant find an answer for just post it on the "Engines" forum and Ill try to help
Hey Aaron,
Damn nice Z-28. My youngest son has an 86 that we just put a 350 into. Kingman Kid has you on the right track regarding smog-legal parts. My understanding of Cali smog laws is that u cant put in a bigger engine unless it was an option from the factory for that year so legally speaking youre stuck with your 305. Having said that I dont know how a smog inspector could tell a 305 from a 350 with an external inspection. Kingman Kid could probly help you there. As he said, there are a surprising number of smog legal parts you can use and you might even be able to convert to a TPI fuel injection unit if u have the cash for it. Arizona TPI, Arizona Speed and Marine, Street and Performance, and Tuned Port Injection Service(TPIS) are some sources for a complete unit programmed to your individual engine specs. If u end up keeping the computer controlled carb then u can get hold of Tom Woodside at GMCOPO for advice on how to get the most out of that combo. His phone number is 215-275-5828. Have fun!
Howdy,
Having ran a Ca Smog Shop in Pomona for a few years, I can tell you that any part, which is C.A.R.B. approoved is o.k. to run. You must maintain your cat converters, but, you can run a low restriction aftermarket cat. As well, there are many performance cams on the market, which are CARB Approved as well as intakes, carbs, headers, ignition and so on, which will eaisly push you over 350 hp.
Easy to find, if you want specifics or some part numbers, shoot me a message and I will get you headed in the right direction.
