I would need a better description of what you mean by slipping, but it sounds like you may have some issues with the gears in the rear end. Try your idea, it will get you moving, but if the rear is damaged, it may come apart. If it is the T case, then it might not get you going.

Hey guy, I was looking at a 1976 cj5 with a 304 and 3 speed,He said the rear end was slipping on it or the something in the driveline he said when you get on the road it starters to jerk like something is slipping. So what do to fix this? I can I drive the jeep in four wheel drive and take the back drive shaft out? thanks ritchey

I have to agree, I love when we get guys out with us for the first time that have "never been stuck" and the first real hole they get to they are done.
