do you mean other than a straight rebuild, are you looking for tips to gain more horsepower?

At least do the basics. On mine all I did was chip the computer, cold air intake, Edelbrock headers, Flowmaster muff, free flow cat and exhaust. Cant tell you what the gains were, have never dynoed it and never had that engine in my truck before.

thanks for the advice. what is an estimate on what you spent on your engine doing the rebuild

from memory...
Around 3k which includes buying the motor and the engine rebuild cost $638.08
The 3k covers a lot of stuff you might not need. My install was into an extreme rock crawler. Close to 1k was for a belt driven air compressor. Also around 1k was a 4.3 conversion kit from Advanced Adapters including computer, bellhousing, motor mounts, wire harness, radiator, maybe more.

i would do 12:1 pistons, and a biiiiiig camshaft. all of the other parts he listed are external parts, a cam will really make that thing run, btw the pistons from a 350 can be used. when i rebuilt my 1998 4.3 out of an s-10 it was cheaper to buy a set of 8 350 pistons than to buy 6 "4.3" pistons. what year is the truck?

No I didn't do anything fancy inside. Its a rock crawler so mostly need torque.
