Hi! I have a 88 Monte Carlo SS with a mildly built 350 in it. I have stock heads with a Comp Cams 280 cam. I have Comp Cams 1.52 ratio roller tip rocker arms. I am considering ordering a set of Summit 1.6 ratio Stud Mount Roller Rockers (SUM-G609). Will these work with stock heads and my cam without causing valve to piston clearance problems or spring breakage. Also do you think I would pick up very much horse power over the roller tip rockers?

Hi Michael, Like your SS, I have an 86 LS that I put a stock Vortec 350 in and it runs great after I got it off the computer. HA. But about your rocker question,
In order to properly give you advice on the stud roller 1.6 rocker swap you will have to find out your spring coil bind height, your installed valve retainer height at spring seat, your max valve lift, piston to head clearance, and if the figures are within peramiters a final valve to piston dome clay check will give the real clearance figure.
I've heard of lots of guys using the 1.6 rockers with mixed results. Some show little gain and some show significant increases. On a chevy stock head you may see the same gains as if you were using a larger cam. Chevy heads also suffer from inefficient exhaust flow and normally respond favorably to the longer rocker where only the exhaust valve rocker gets a 1.6 swap. You could try a set of cheaper 1.6 stamped rockers on the exhaust only to test the outcome.
I feel the rollers are a bit overkill on a mildly built 350 not usually seeing more than 5000rpm, especially with stock heads, but they look cool before you put the covers on!
Later and good luck! Oh I could not find the SUM-G609 rockers in Summit but ther was a G6906 & G6920B in a 1.6.

Hi! Thanks for the advice. I wrote the part # down wrong. The one you gave was the correct one. I have talked to several people and have decided against the 1.6 roller rockers. They seem to think there would be very little HP increase because I already have 1.52 roller tip rockers. I like your idea of using 1.6 rockers on the exhaust valves. I have a friend who wants to go 50/50 on a set of 1.6 roller tip rockers because he too has a set of 1.52 roller tip rockers on his car. That way we would each end up with 8 for half the price of buying a full set. If it doesn't make much extra HP at least I won't be out much cash!
