Sounds like a nice truck krazy, I've never had a IH straight 6, how reliable do you think they are? Are you planning on keeping it stock? If it runs good I like to keep them stock, saves money and less work. Then you can dump the money into the body.

My 74 scout ii is still pretty much stock. Straight 6, stock rims and originally a Colorado truck.

Another thing, waz the mechanic an IH guy or just a general mechanic?
People who don't know IH just don't get it. They ARE different from other brands of motors and act different. Each brand has their own unique ways, ya got to get used to the IH way.

Hey xScout, does the scout still run? Howz the oil pressure? Ya know mechanics are greedy beasts right? EVERYTHING needs thousands of dollars of work even if it's just a bad ground. JUST DRIVE IT! See for yer self if it still runs good or not. Keep an eye on the oil pressure and if the knocking quiets when it warms up or gets worse, if it gets worse then ya got a problem, if it gets better then drive it. You can get lots of fun miles out of it with a little knock. It's been my experence that older IH motors have a little knock no matter what but still pull like crazy.

I had a knock in my engine since i got it. Nothing bad. i brought it to the mechanic and basicly said the motor was shot and to repair the engine is gonna cost a grand or two. Im just taking it off the road to make it my project car and getting a jeep. Im 19 so money is hard to come buy. In a few years ill hope to get my beast on the road again.

awww man, I could use your help too! LOL, Im just waiting for some nice weather to tear into it, at this rate thats looking like august LOL.thanks for the input on the seals, I will def check into that, and the info on the tranny mounts-I would have never thought of that. Between you and Doug I will def have a sweet running truck by summer (fingers crossed) thanks guys

Well if I waz closer I would volenteer right away. But az I'm probably 3,000 or more miles from you I'll have to respectfully decline on helping for now.

I'm thinking it's bad gas too. How long haz it been in the tank? Is it left over from last year? And the tranny moving back, it sounds like a tranz mount and maybe motormounts also. Ya gonna have to check em out. You can still get IH motor seal and gasket kits from NAPA, I know, I did it last year and they were cheap! You may have to special order them but they still seem to have them in a warehouse somewhere.

Well IHnut, I wish I could tell you whats wrong with my scout, the list is endless! but it seems to need every single seal replaced from the tranny to the rear end, It also doesnt seem to want to stay running, so Im thinking of dropping the tank to see if maybe its bad gas or???? The clear fuel filter is showing really dis colored gas, so Im thinking its rust or bad gas in the tank (gas gauge dont work-dont know how much is ever in it), It needs some electrical work but man oh man the tires are sure purty!!! And it has a hard time engaging the 4wheel drive. I think the tranny has jumped back a little, cuz the gear shift is off by a little, dont know if you are in drive or neutral??? But other than that its a nice lawn ornament, just a waiting for some nice weather, money and maybe some helping hands to get the beast running.........any takers???LOL
