Will, it sounds like you've quite a project ahead of you. My 81 is still under construction after several years, but I did extensive body and drivetrain mods to it. stretched cab, air ride, 6.0l engine from a new truck, etc. Bruce Horkey offers a show bed kit for steel boxes it is an insert that allows you to still use your truck as a truck and show it off after. Welcome to the group and good luck with your project

I have a 1982 Chevy 1/2-ton pickup with a 6.2 liter diesel engine. I'd like to find out what's available for this engine that will give me more power without assassinating my fuel milage.

Ray that's the way to do it. Get the doors gapped first, then when they're perfect then set the fenders. Just be sure the cab is squared up on the frame with good(new?) body mounts. Trust me this is very important to the final alignment.....been there....didn't do that the first time!
