One last thought on the torque converter thing... automatic transmissions are VERY sensitive to contamination of any kind. There are LOTS of little passages the fluid must flow through for the thing to work, and it doesn't take much to plug them up and render your tranny junk. If you pick up an "old" torque converter that wasn't properly stored (dust cap over the opening) or that came from a transmission that had issues, odds are there's debris inside that will sooner or later cause you to regret your decision.

and i learn something new again today. I have said before that I've used a scrap yard tranny, but the one I bought came out of a car I had scrapped. So I had the advantage of knowing that it worked well before i junked the car (blown motor). With anything from a bone yard, or even a guy down the road if you didn't actually see it working odds are your best bet is having it rebuilt or gone through at the least.

Good point Jack, but one thing. Who do you call when you dont know WHO made the converter? That is why I didnt bother mentioning it. Many manufacturers paint them blue.

Impala, I really thought someone else would answer your converter question this way, since no one did, I will...

Get the manufacturer name and any PN or SN you can from the converter. Call or email the company that makes it. Tell them your PN, SN, etc. They will tell you what stall the converter is rated for. This is especially true in the aftermarket. I have used this and I got very good advice from TCI. It turned out that the converter I bought was perfect for my application. The only drawback was that they said I couldn't use nitrous with it unless I like to pick up broken converter parts. :-(

And Sheldon, depending on the paint, yes you can get it off with brake cleaner. Since it wasnt cured to your vehicle, most of the time it will take off paint transfer. And unless your paint is highly oxidized, it will only dull your finish a little, nothing that a little bit of wax wont fix

Impala, Marty is very right in every aspect. And to also let you know since you had asked, any TH350 or TH400 converter will interchange. They share the same pump splines. And if you want a stall converter, I would suggest you follow Marty's suggestions.

Impala, you can take a paint scrape off with brake cleaner?! And Jack I only know about the Nag next door from experience, the first day I moved to this place I picked up a cheap lawn mower, to mow down the jungle in the backyard. it was about 10 in the morning. the lady next door came out Ballisticly screamin telling me to "Shut off that contraption" I replied with a The best and brightest are already up lady! So shove it!

I can only add that there's no way (short of installing it and testing it) to be sure of a torque converter's stall speed without opening it up. And then only by someone who knows what to look for. Although a good rule of thumb is that the smaller the diameter, the higher the stall. Since it's such a PAIN-IN-THE-ASS to change if it's wrong, a torque converter is something I usually at least get as a rebuilt unit (if not new). I know $$ is tight, but unless you REALLY know where it's been, it's a risky proposition. By the way, a converter's stall speed is also affected quite a bit by engine horsepower and vehicle weight. A good trans shop will ask about both before setting you up with a custom rebuilt converter.

Impala look back through the posts, I think it was determined you didn't need a big stall converter. If you had your old one flushed you could re-use it. But I could be mistaken. As far as what will or won't work thats a question better left to someone else, lol. I think as long as it's a gm convertor it would "fit" but I'd wait for someone else to answer
