Wow Chris, I thought I commuted. 100 miles a day? I can see why you would want the 26MPG! I dont blame you wanting to add a little more style to the look of it either. And for a V6, those newer ones really dont run all that bad either. I know i would drive it too

Impala, sorry if it sounded that way, but I didnt mean to say that you were wrong. I agreed with you that it did have struts. But in Sheldon's case, this particular setup doesnt actually use a bearing plate. Unlike most strut front suspensions, the strut mounting on his Cougar doesnt pivot. He still has an upper control arm with a ball joint. All it is on his car is a thick rubber insulator pad.

Impala, what I was trying to say was in 23 years of working on cars for a living, I have never had to replace one of those insulators. End links, sure, but not the strut insulators. So I tried to say that Gene was more likely correct. This is why normally dont try to add to another persons suggestion Impala. I seem to do just what happened, getting you apologizing for no needed reason. I understand why you suggested checking there, really, and it wasnt a bad suggestion. I just tried to add my experience in is all. I understand all too well having to do things on your own, as you cant afford to pay someone else. I jumped in after your suggestion only because I didnt want Sheldon to go through that kind of teardown inspection if he didnt really have to is all. Sorry again if I hurt your feelings, that was not my intention. And Impala, I will try to speak in behalf of others here that we all know your intentions are meant well!

It’s an 05 disguised as a GT then I added wide boss 429 hood scoop from a company called after thoughts.

I was a big target for all my Ford friends after I bought it.
It was pay back time for all my years of friendly Ford bashing

My commuter car is the Mustang 26 mpg v6
Its 49 miles to work 49 home
The Trans Am it gets 8 mpg I would need to gas up 2 times a week
So the Pontiac is only for play

Umm, guys i know we alL agree that impala is wrong! BUT.... ( hear me out, now that we know that the car has struts, what about checking the strut towers? aka bearings.. I know it sounds crazy but i have found that they also make noises. Then again, the load was off when it did the last "CLUNK" RIGHT?? I DON'T MEAN TO STEER ANYONE IN THE WRONG DIRECTION.. IF I DO, SORRY Y HOMIE!! JUST MY 2 CENTS..

So I worked a little to late. and ran out of sunshine. I'm going to try and take a look at it tomorrow. I have a felling gene-0 is on the money. we will see. Impala We did remove the shock tower to change the strut bushings. I didn't see any cracks on the plates. BUT! I wasn't looking either so I will take a peak at that for sure. And Kevin your input is always welcome here man! You haven't steered me wrong yet. lol

Sure Gene, you are right. It is possibly an end link. This is why I said you are possibly on the right track. Actually I think you are closer than Impala. It is because of what you said Gene why I wasnt going to say anything until Shedlon had commented on what he found. But i commented after Impala had jumped in becasue in all honesty, I thought it would send Sheldon the wrong way. If you have noticed, I normally dont chime in when someone has already helped another with a suggestion, esp if I thought they were told something that is possibly correct. I dont want to confuse the person with the problem, or make the one that helped upset because they think I was contradiciting them. But I will if I feel someone is being lead the wrong way. OK, I will say this. It is possible that it could be a bad strut rod bushing too, but I wanted to wait to say anything just in case you were right on the end link Gene
Gene-0 Comment by Gene-0 on November 16, 2009 at 6:49am
the reason i thought broken end link kevin was because my brothers car would do the same kind of thing when you made a turn or hit a bump in the road. His bonneville ( a 98) is a strut front suspension too. I guess I didn't think about the springs, but I would think you would get more of a creaky noise from that impala?
