Spike, is it possible for me to replace the feed wire to the ditributor ( to stop the voltage drop?) its embarrassing to run the car, come up to a stoplight and the car wants and runs out of gas. ( full tank) hey another thing, after it sputters and dies, wfter i finally get started, it idles like a champ for maybe about 2-3 minutes. then the process starts right up again. ( IT WILL NOT DIE, IF I KEEP ONE FOOT ON THE BRAKE AND ONE ON THE THROTTLE) Sorry if i bug you spike! there isnt anyone else helping around here and i can tell you are agood person that is willing to lend a helping hand. BTW. If you ever need help with the hydraulic suspension, i got you!! i might be usefull for other than just ordering pizza's. LOL LOL

thanks spike, the intake needed no adapter for the rochester or edlebrock carb. I will however look for a leak where you mention. I just drove the car yesterday for the first time in several months since I've been repainting it. I want to add this to the description of my problem. It started to behave better after the engine started to warm up (above 160), I suspect i may have a bad plug wire again also.

It all fits a vacuum leak to Gene-O. A bad intake gasket, maybe a very small bit of old gasket that wasn't removed for the changeover. He changed a lot by using a different intake manifold & carb. There is a slighly different possibility, Was a carb adapter placed properly between the manifold & the Edalbrock carb? Since the manifold was run initially with a Rochester Q-jet it isn't set up for a so called "square pattern" carb. so an adapter & two gaskets, one fits a square pattern the other to fits the Q-jet. It is a very easy way to get a vacuum leak. Or gaskets, or old material, a cracked vacuum hose (to dist advance). How about a crack in the power brake hose? Is the carb 'snugged' down evenly & carefully? That's the best I can do at the moment. I was reading the Nov. Car Craft mag & there was a paragraph on not to use ' Dialectric' grease between the module & dist mount plate. It causes extra heatto accumulate in the module. You should use a grease (name forgotten) that acts as a 'Heat Sink' purchased at Radio Shack in a very small red tube. They should know by the description. Wrong grease = poor running. Engine heats up & shuts itself off, cools down then will runn again, for a while. How about your dist not getting a full 12V at the coil because of using the wrong coil wire, which has a voltage drop in it (for points) HEI doesn't like it. I probably mentioned that earlier, but my mind is a 'Sieve' , All memory drips out & gets swept up. LOL bye

Any suggestions to solve my problem? As I posted yesterday the car was a 4bbl to begin with, I just changed to an edelebrock intake and carb. It, stumbles off the line if I hammer it and occationaly it will back fire through the carb...

i believe up till 86 they came carburated Impala, Mine came with a rochester 4bbl, the tbi was an option so was tpi I believe. Anyhow when I had the shop replace the original 305 with the reman. I had them put the edlebrock intake on it, and I swapped the rochester for the 1406 edlebrock a few months later along with removing the computer controlled HEI and putting in one that was pre computer.

WHAT DID YOU! DO TO THE POOR LITTLE THING??????????? I get it running & you break it!!! LOL Tongue FIRMLY in cheek! Check the Ignition. From grounds to plugs (wires included). I may have to reposess(!) it. I (think) you are safe with a carb in 1985, but I wouldn't try it in '86, TBI?? or TPI? BTW, the 427" I'm thinking about is a SBC not a BBC. They're too Bulky.

i got another vote for the 427 SPIKE! My kid says" dad lets make your car a bigblock" i asked him and he likes the 427 rat. So theres #2.. (BTW) MY CAR is acting up again spike.. it seems to run good when cold, as it warms,up the car wants to turn off, idles a little weird. Backfires a little, stumbbles like a drunken crackhead LOL ( that ALOTTTT) ~~GENE-O~~ your in good hands with these guys.. they all really know "WHATS UP". and i didnt know that the 85 iroc was carburated? TPI?

Hey there everyone, Impala Builder sugested in another group that this is the place for info on carb issues and I see he's active here. Here's my issue, I have an 85 Iroc with a reman 305 (jasper stage 1 which i guess has a mild cam in it) I have an edelbrock performer intake with a 1406 edelbrock performer carb on the engine. Theres a pre-computer HEI ignition installed in it that except for the vac advance, coil and counter-weights is all new. I've been fighting it running rich ( you can smell unburned fuel) since I installed it, the choke is electric and does open all the way when warmed up. I have played with the idle mix screws and they are only out far enough to keep it idleing smoothly at 700 rpm ( the recomended speed) It also stumbles or backfires through the carb when you hammer the throttle from a stop under load (ie burnout or taking off from a stop sign) if I take off smoothly it doesn't cause me too much trouble but something isn't right. I'm mechanicly inclined, but carbs are not my strong point. I have had it suggested to me that it might be a vacuum leak and this seems possible but i don't think it's the only problem. HELP?!

That's one for 427ci I'll have to see about it. A 400 block & a 4.00" crank If the block will hold it.Hmm.
