Gentlemen, whats going on? Hows everyone? I have a question. if you blow the power valve, is it possible the car "ocassionally" runs ok? i swear, my car aka: Pantydropper ran like a champ this weekend, even did a burn out a show, the friggin car smoked em in 1st,2nd and even through 3rd gear. TOO COOL!! well i got sidetracted already, the thing is, many times the carb runs crappy, not saturday. is that possible, or was i just hallucinating?? LOL

I can't laugh. I'm still learning all sorts of NEW ways to screw up! As to keeping the car?? I tell you what, get really angry with the way it's NOT running !!!!!
Just call me and tell me to come and 'Git it'!!! You don't want a contrary car like this, DO YOU??? LOLOL!!
I'm trying to keep ahead of you. My ability is straining to get ahead of the problems. That's a good thing. It keeps me trying & thinking.
Timing does have a great deal to do with how an engine runs. If the engine is 'sluggish', it is retarded or less advanced. Check the advance at idle. First, with the vacuum hose disconnected, check the advance at the crank damper & pointer. It would be 6*-12* advance (for example). Check how much it advances as you rev the engine up. That tells you what the total MECHANICAL advance the weights & springs allow. Also check the rpm that it first gets FULL advance. Then replace the hose and check the timing at idle, then go up 500 rpm to see how much the vacuum advance adds compared to the mechanical only. Go up 500 or 1000 rpm at a time. checking how much advance the vacuum adds at each step. I probably should mention that you will need a friend or TWO to help with this.
If the mech advance is slow moving or jumpy then you might spray the weights & pins, (or remove same & clean). If you want to change the way the advance comes in, buy a spring kit. changing one (or both) springs alters the rpm at which it is full advance & the speed at which it advances, plus total amount of advance. Did that make sense? I'm lost. If the advance TOTAL isn't 34* -38* You don't have enough. Now that we are BOTH confused. If (after hooking up the hose) you don't have the expected advance, the hose Or vacuum diaphragm is cracked or broken. Replacing it will DEFINATELY help the running. This will keep you busy until you write next time. Bye

Spike.. I was wondering, could "timing" have anything to do with the problem? Or a busted distributor diaphram? Some dude told me the vacuum advance is not working and i should replace the weights aswell.

Spike~~ btw. thanks for listening and all the tireless help you provide my friend. sorry i get a little frustrated with this car. You helping me is probably the only reason why i still own the car and or its not a shop getting "oh you just need all the fluids flushed and then we will diagnose the problem" signature move thrown on us.... LOL

YES.... EXACTLY! THIS IS BEEN GOING ON FOR SOME TIME.. i know we have to take it easy on the rides but, this is redicoulous!! everyone can burn rubber, except me!!!!!! What the 5$^&%$%^*???? all this money shoved into this car, all the power ( fairly low horse power but higher than stock> LOL) and i cant even take on a frigging 3 cylinder at a stoplight. urrrggghh!! frustrated, please feel free to laugh..

I ended up with #87 jets-Primary & 96-98 in the Secondary side. Of course that wasn't a 'street' setup. YUP, Power valve. I used a plug. It's not too good on the street. Your description sounds lean at idle. Open the throttle pumping quickly, it gets too much air & not enough gas.
It shouldn't lose rpm by running a wire direct from the switch 'on' position. I am at a loss as to why. I'll have to think. You shouldn't need a new carb just replace the power valve. They come in various vacuum ratings. I believe that you check the vacuum gauge at idle, then install a PV with a rating a couple of numbers less. If it's idles at 8.0" install a 6.0" or 6.5". At least that's what I remember. Your mileage & power may vary. LOL!

Were you talking about a pizza? It did sound good.. So i hook up a wire from the switch to the coil?? IT KINDA LOOSES RPM, if your too fast on "tapping" the throttle while its dying ( to try and save it); it will turn off. MUST FEATHER IN.... Yes i do believe it has backfired through the carburetor.!! Powervalve?? Sound like i need another carb.. IM NOT REALLY INTO SAVING GAS.... I just want it to stay on and burn rubber.. ( oh and 3 wheel!) 850 holley, yeahhhhh that cool. Airbags you say, well im ok with that, i bagged my other car, 02 malibu.

A lg handtossed,Supreme, to go? No? OK. Yes, all you need is a wire direct from the switch "on position", direct to the coil. Does the engine rpm go up as it dies ? Or, does the engine just die ? If it goes up, it means it is too rich, same rpm or drops as it dies, it's lean. Do you know which jets are in that carb you bought ? How about, have you had a backfire through the carb ? You may have blown the, uh!! I forgot it's name. It screw into the jet block and adds fuel to the mixture when the vacuum drops. Rats, it's a problem when this happens. It's a -------- valve. Anyway, if your carb backfires thru! the carb it can be blown out and that totally screws up the mixture & running.
Now on my 850 Holley I replaced it with a plug and added jets about 10 sizes bigger. Of course, I didn't care about mileage as it only ran a few seconds at a time. A gallon in two passes, that's what ? about 7/10s MPG.
How about dirt in the jets ? unscrew then blow them with carb cleaner. I would blow down the two breather tubes sticking upfrom the carb body. You see!, I have no clue what names are, I just use them. You might go to a 'Summit' catalog & order a Holley repair & tune book. If there isn't one available locally. I like Air Bags, wish I had some for both of my old Fords (49 & 53) Talk to you later. Let me know if any of this is helpful (or not)!
