i have a 1993 caprice with a stock 305 tbi
iam planning on getting a 350 out of a 94 suburban and building it into a 383 stroker
i was wondering if i could use the stock throttle body and still make good numbers?
i plan on buying an edlebrock aluminum tbi intake
and i also plan on using the stock heads
or should i just rebuild the 350 with a new cam and not stroke it out???
Lowrider,
Honestly, the engine size is more your decision on what you want. Both will have excellent power advantages over the stock 305, and the stroker will give you even more bottom end torque. Spike or Kingman Kid are great here for giving exact parts ideas and what to expect from them.
On the TBI, definitely scrap it. The CFM rating for the TBI unit is too small for that 350 or 383. Either take the TBI unit from that Suburban (Which will have the larger throttle blades) and upgrade the injectors in it, or Holley even has TBI replacements for engine upgrades. Going either way will significantly help the bigger engine breathe, and make more power. And the 305 TBI would most likely try to keep the system too lean, giving you other problems. I hope this helps
Kevin is right. i just completed my 1991 caprice 305 with tbi and i had so many problems with the pcm and throttle body. I had my block bored .040 over and a slightly bigger cam put in. nothing major but it was too much for the pcm and it threw the tbi out of wack. if it wasnt running rich,it ran lean. there is a EZ EFI self tunning kit that u might want to take a look at as well. But let me just say, the advice on here is on the money! Good luck
i have done a 383 many times and saw very little gains by the extra 33cubes, and yes your throttle body will do just fine, i have done a lot of 350 swaps into 5.0l camaros and the stock throttle bodies always work. but a tuned port manifold/throttle body will bolt on, and work awesomely with your stock computer, i have done that one a lot too. just go find one at your local junkyard i usually go to the self-service junkyards because the tpi manifolds are like $85 complete when you pull it.
also use the stock heads from your 1993 caprice on the 350, the runners, and valves are the exact same size but the combustion chambers are smaller giving you 12:1 compression with 15cc domed pistons, and a solid 11:1 with flat-tops
