Hey Michael,,,I think Chuck is right on this one,,,all of the Fords I have worked on were like what he said,,,in fact,,,a lot of the ones I've worked on were the first generation throttle bodies,,,and by the way,,,a real screwy design and hard to get tuned correctly once they go south. Not being a Ford tech,,,I'm kinda shootin' in the dark with this one.I just worked on an '85 the other day,,,and could not,,,and I mean,,,COULD NOT,,,get the beast to run,,,tried everything,,,from coils,to modules,to pickups,,,to a whole new distributer,,,everything,,,it's still sittin' there at my shop,,,oh,,,did I mention the customer is getting real inpatient with me,,,I'm about to tell him to fix it himself if he doesn't quit calling the shop and buggin' me,,,anyway,,,I'd be a little carefull with the modification you speak of.What about an adapter,,,have you tried finding something like that,,you know,,,a single to a four barrel adapter,,,that would definately make things easier,,,just a though.

The 1 to 4 bbl swap is not uncommon but I don't remember any of the 300cu 6s coming with a 4bbl from the factory. Just about all the ones I've seen have been after market with getting a new intake & header since for a lot of years they were one piece. The only other way to get a little more pep would to run a 1bbl on each end of the intake by grinding flat the ends of the stock intake, marking & drilling the carb mounting stud holes & drilling out the hole for the carb itself. Linkage gets interesting but doable.

Michael, I'm not up much on ford's, but I dont believe that they had a factory 4bbl on the engine you speak of. Again I could be wrong, But I think they may sell them in a Summit racing catalog? Or perhaps Clifford Research? It's been awhile since I read up on the subject. If I am wrong with any of this, I do appologize.

Hey Frank,,,what kind of carb are you using????,,,I'll be able to help you better if I know what kind of animal I am dealing with. They all have their little quirks,,but I have dealt with just about all of them,,and I have books on a lot of them,,,just let me know. You'll be surprised how simple a problem it probably is when you get it tuned,,,give me a shout

Arthur,
Yeah, they're a bit "different"! The one thing that's impressed me so far in this, is the bearings. The engine we currently have apart had 160k miles on it. The timing chain stuff was chewed up pretty bad, it'd blown a head gasket, so I figured, may as well do the whole thing while it's out... Took the bearings apart, and they (NO KIDDING!) looked brand new, you could see the machining marks still. The down side? $600 in bolts to put the thing back together! BTW, Son in Law, gave me some prices on those tools, came to about $90, I go to order on the web site..... more like $310! Any body wanna rent (or sell) their cam holding tool?
Regards,
Bruce
