Anyone going to the Route 66 Rendezvous in San Bernardino Sept 17-20?
http://www.route-66.org/about_us.htm
I've not been there before but it looks like fun and I'll be in the area anyway so I think it's about time I check it out. I'd love a chance to say hi to any of you if you're gonna be there too.

Weekend Wrench,

Be careful. Never buy a Corvette from eBay. You need to be able to inspect the car before you put down the cash.

A Corvette's worth has to taken on a car by car basis.

I have owned Corvettes since 1968. I have been around them since 1964. I have always been around them and my family and extended family has always owned them.

With that being said, watch out for the self proclaimed experts. Generally they don't know sh#t.

Many people fall into the "Corvette trap".

Let me explain. Just because someone can aquire the car doesn't mean they can afford to operate it when they do aquire one.

The general operating cost of a C3 Corvette is about $1,000.00 dollars a year. That's after the work was done and you are just enjoying it. (This is trap one.)

(This operating cost doesn't include gas fill ups.)

Trap two: The old, "I can get one pretty cheap and fix it up."

A C3 (1968-1982) is the biggest trap of all. Most C3s are not worth $10,000.00 in mint condition. (The exceptions are early number matching ones , factory bigs blocks, roadsters with both tops, or rare option cars.) So, you can get "upside down" on them fast.

What do I mean by "up side down" ?

This is when a Corvette in mint condition is worth $8,500.00 and you have $20,000.00 in it....It hapens fast! Corvette parts are expensive!

There is a big selling price difference in a 1969 Big Block Roadster complete with both tops (soft and hard) and a 1975 T-top L-48 automatic.

Corvette parts are Corvette parts. They are expensive. Both these cars share a lot of the same parts, but the selling completed price is what matters when you want to sell.

Be carefull on what you decide to restore.

In this example..Both cars would generally cost about the same to restore depending on what had to be done. (Of corse a big block engine restore vrs a small block restore would cost more, but generally the rollers would cost the same.)

However, you want the outcome to be in you favor.

This is why a lot of Corvette just sit in garages. There are also a lot of common this that go wrong with C3 Corvette that will put a new owner in debt...(prices are just for parts)

Core support rusted out= about $400.00 (this problem also can effect headlight door operation and headlight door parts are VERY expensive)

Rear Wheel Bearings/Rear Spindles= If the bearings arent serviced regularly every 40k you can just count on new ones. The grease get old and hard...the bearings spin on the race and then you are into it for about another $400.00/$450.00

You can pretty much count on 6 new U-joints=$125.00.

Frame or Rear Swing Arms rusted out= sky is the limit on this repair. It just depends on how bad. The trailing arms are generally about another $400.00 (bare)

"didn't know the car was wrecked"... Same as the frame rusted out.

I saw a guy buy a 1967 roadster and then discover that it had one air shock on the driver's side rear in order to hold that end of the car up because the frame was bent that bad. A body shop did a qiuckie repair and then sold the car.

The list goes on. If you never intend on selling the car get what you want, but in reality....I'd pay more up front and come out much more ahead in the end.

Would you rather have money in the bank and growing every day (1969 big block roadster) or being sucked dry at every turn with a fixer upper 1975 T-Top L-48?

If you are looking at them already e-mail me so I can send you a list of all the stuff you need to look out for.

I hope this helps...
