Clarence, I had a car come in once that had a "big dent in the door". I commented that it looked like a size 10. She said "WOW! That IS what size he wears!". Lucky guess. LOL. So ya never will know what happened, but I'm bettin' it was intentional damage.

This car is going completely original (other than using a bed liner coating for the undercoating since it will be a driver) so it will be the original burgendy in base/clear acrylic urethane. I'll keep the pics coming as it should progress faster now that all the structural and panel replacement has been completed. I want this car to be up to my best standards for two reasons: 1) It belongs to a friend who appreciates my work and what all is involved. And 2) This is my last one.

Ron - As the rest of the car got stripped down bare I had visions of other major welds being found along the 1/4 panel. I especially looked in the water channel area of the trunk to see how all the panels came together and surprisingly enough that top weld was the only major flaw in the metal. I need to check again to see when the car was built. Maybe it was on a Monday or Friday.. :-)   Nice job on your work. Keep the updates coming. It looks like it will be an awesome car once complete. Do you already have a color picked out?

Clarence- That pic is with the 1/4 panel removed at the factory seam (after the lead was removed). The 1/4 needed replaced due to the rust on the lower parts of the panel and wheelhouses (on both sides). All the previous paint on the roof will be stripped to bare metal too. I am not sure what that is on yours! Does it show signs of the 1/4 panel being previously replaced (and from the looks of THAT welding it should be obvious)? After working at a dealership (years ago!) I was surprised at how many new vehicles needed repairs prior to being sold as new (either damage done during transport or during test drives, or even sitting on the lot) and of course nothing was revealed to the buyer! So it's hard to say in your case. Looks like their welding caused warping to the roof requiring so much filler. Here is a pic after the 1/4 was installed and welded solid- a few spots here, a few spots there, allowed to cool, then continue.

Hey Ron, I just saw the pictures you added back on the 11th. Specifically the 3rd one from the top of the drivers side roof. Did it need sanding down just due to the work your doing? The reason I ask is that when I was stripping the car down from what I thought was original paint I found the following under the Wimbledon White paint.

From the above to the ugly found underneath and no idea what happened here...

Took forever to smooth this out for the new paint.

I wanted to point something out in my pics. If you noticed, the rotisserie is unbolted in the rear and an A-frame support brace is underneath supporting the car where the weight bearing point is (centered between leaf spring mounts). This is very important because if you installed the 1/4 while on the rotisserie then let the car down on a sub-frame car they will usually sag just a bit and close the gap at the top of door to 1/4. All structural welding of panels must be done as if it was weight bearing on the wheels or your gaps will not be accurate. I also test fitted the deck lid and 1/4 extensions to assure fit and gaps (not shown in pics) prior to welding. I also use several 1/8" screws to hold in place once aligned so the parts can be disassembled and prepped for welding to insure exact same alignment on re-assembly and during welding. The silver you see is a zinc weld-thru coating to insure that rust does not form between panels where welding is performed
