The trans was almost-new when I pulled it out of my buddy's truck, and it was working fine the last time it was driven. My hope was to install the trans and drive it out to TN but the time was just too tight and I had to leave it in Cali.It has an electric lock-up converter that I control with a switch on the dash. The fluid doesn't smell burnt at all and and I've changed the fluid and filter, which came out clean with no debris. I'm stumped...

Hey Rick,,,is the torque converter lock-up,,,,, electric or manual switched,,,what happens with 700r4's is that the pump bushing wears and metal starts to shear off,,,and then the metal starts,,kinda scurying around inside the tranny causing the valve body to get all crudded up,,unfortunately,,in most cases,,it does real bad things to the entire transmission,,,you can try doing a trans flush on it,,you know,,,,change the filter and then put it all back together and flush it,,,and try some synthetic trans fluid,,that might clean the clutch surfaces and clean out the valve bores in the valve body. It's a little time consuming but a whole lot better than replacement or re-build.I have a kitted turbo350 in mine with a 3300 stall and it's been holding up real well,,,but I still would like the 700r4 just because of the gear ratios,,,also,,I would be able to install taller gears in the rear-end with the overdrive,,,give my 500hp a little more bite.Anyway,,good luck with her,,,there is always something else,,just when you get her right were you want her.

Hey, Arther- Thanks for the kind words! My S-10 is no show truck, it was never intended to be one. I drive the crap outa' that thing!!! It has the scrapes and chips to prove it! I recently installed a new transmission, (700R4) but it seems to be shifting from first to third, then OD. No second. I've double-checked the linkage and everything is hooked up and adjusted correctly. Only thing I can think of, the trans was sitting for about two years before I bought if from a buddy in California, then installed it. After that I moved out here to Tennessee and the truck sat in California for another year+ before I could get it out here. I never drove it in Cali with this trans, and from the first time I drove it out here there's no 2nd gear. Think maybe something in the valve body is stuck?

That is a huge,,,"BUMMER",,,sorry to hear that,,,but that is the way things work,,,I guess!!!!,,,just about the time you're ready to go with something,,,,it's like a big hand comes out of the sky,,,and says,,,,no,,,not yet,,,I believe you're going to do this first. When I decided to up-grade my engine componenets,,,dist, carb, wiring harness, all of a sudden,,it was NOPE,,,you ain't doin that right now,,,I think you'll have to do this first,,,anyway,,,good luck with everything,,,let me know if I can help,,,I might be able to stear you the direction of some parts or other stuff.

Actually I further investigated things .... decided seeing as it was mobile to head down the road ..... got a couple hundred yards away and crunch ... Look Ma ... no clutch .... the pressure plate finally gave up the ghost. I had known it was bad for over a year ... managed to haul a ton of goods in a U Haul from Alberta to Nova Scotia ... but guess that was the last straw. Looks like the engine and tranny swap just got moved up on the schedule. Gonna take the 4 banger and tranny out before it goes to the body shop so the engine bay can be spruced up ... then install the 350 and 700R4 when she comes back. Thanks for the help ...Will keep you guys advised as the work goes on ...

Hey Brett,,,did he give you any clue where the crunch came from,,,like,,,was it the vicinity of the trans or the rear end,,,it sounds like a gear tooth broke off and jammed in the others,,,and as soon as he stopped,,the piece fell back out of the way letting it work,,just guessing at this point,,,anyway,,,good luck with her,,,hope she'l keep working till after the run to the body shop.
