The crossmember,,,is part of the entire frame,,,that's one of the best ones I've heard in a long time,,,Ok,,,well,,,I guess,if it were me,,,I wouldn't be giving that particular dealership, anymore of my business,,,well,,you really can't,,,seeing how the parts person is a complete idiot.I mean,,,how can you buy anything,,if there is nothing to buy,,oh,,wait a minute,,I guess you can buy the entire vehicle,,but if you did that,,,than what would be the reason for needing a part,,,it gets so confusing.

Just talked to my buddy the mechanic who has done a number of engine swaps ... He says " GM Yoke is a GM Yoke is a GM Yoke " ..... Guess that answers that question ... and in the trunk of my car is sitting the cross-member for automatics for an S10.... Now all I need is someone who can bend and put the right connectors on the cooling lines for the tranny .... any volunteers?

Hmmmm Looks like the problem now is finding a yoke to fit the 700R4 ....

Hey Arthur ... My favorite junkyard came through .... only 40 Canukistani Rasbuckniks for the crossmember ...am also getting the cooling lines for the transmission and either the Yoke or complete drive shaft.... I'm not sure that the drive shaft off the 5 speed will fit or not. ... My truck is really short coupled ... standard cab and short 6' box ... 2 wd . BTW the local Chebby dealer parts guy tells me the only way to get that cross-member is as part of a complete frame ..... yeah suuure .... any insight would be greatly appreciated ...

Well all I can say,,,,is that sucks,,,I hate it when I start a project,,,and just about the time you think you have all of your parts and all of the special tools that you need,,,,all lined up,,,the dark clouds roll in and pretty much rains right square on your parade. In answer to your question,,,a big yes,,,I mean,,,even if you had to drill or enlarge some holes in the frame,,,the cross member would work most excellantly.Definately look at the wrecking yard first,,,or better yet,,,use the phone,,,don't burn up a lot of fuel. The great part is that some wrecking yards let you bring your tools and go looking,so while you're out there,,,you might find some other things you've been looking for.Hope you find one, without having to go through a lot of pain.Let me know how everything goes

Thanks Arthur ... Another question .... because the 700R4 was used in these trucks wouldn't getting a stock cross-member that comes from a truck with an automatic do the job? I can probably get one of those from a local Junkyard or failing that from my local Chebby dealer. Biggest problem is that I have to wait until they open tomorrow to go and hunt stuff down ... that kinda put the kibosh on getting her bolted in this weekend ... and it kind of looks like next weekend is a wash too as my helper's wife and new baby are coming home from a long visit with her parents in Newfoundland and somehow, as they have been away about 3 weeks, I really don't think I will be seeing Richard next weekend ... ;-)

Ok Brett,,,go to "400Raptor.com",,,,this is a transmission website that has crossmembers that will cure that problem, also,,advanceadaptors,,,also has mounts for anything you can think of,,the driveline yoke might be available, but I'm not sure on that,,you might have to find a driveline shop and have them weld a 700r4 yoke on,,now,,my airbag is disconnected and so is my abs system,,I really haven't looked into that yet,,and to be honest with you,,,I didn't give it much thought yet,but thanks for reminding me,,,as far as the heat=shielding those particular items,,,you kind of have to get creative with that,,I went to a couple of wrecking yards and p/u some of the softer shielding, just look for the better looking stuff, most of the time they won't even charge you for it.My steering column cover,is about a 1/4 of an inch from the header, and I haven't had any problem yet and the spark plug wires,,,unless they are sitting right on the header itself, they usually hold up.I'm getting ready to find some more heatshield right now,my problem area is on the passenger side, right where the collector runs past the firewall, the paint is extremely burned or flaking off,,,anymore problems,,give me a hollar,,I'll try and be as much help as I can

OK Guys why didn't someone warn me that I would have to change the rear crossmember when I changed the truck from a 5 speed to a 700R4? What about the yoke from the driveshaft to the 700R4 ... will I have to change that too ? The 350 and transmission are now sitting in the engine compartment but we haven't been able to bolt up the mounts yet due to the problem with the transmission mount.
Another other question I have is does the air bag require the ECU to be retained or do you have to disconnect the system?
This being my first swap I am running into things that I had no idea were going to jump up and bite me. I "Thought" I had all the bases covered before we tore into the truck ... I'm learning the hard way. One other thing ... the headers I got for the swap are really close to the plugs and wires as well as the rubber sleeve on the steering column any suggestions about how to protect them?

Thanks for any help

Brett

I was seeing how many people wanted to look at it. It got several looks. I am going to keep it for a while I think. Might sell it later and build another one.
