I am needing help with my power windows on my 1999 528i

I have a drivers side window and rear passenger window that have failed. They will move a little and then not want to go up anymore. I am mainly looking for info on how the interior door panel is removed to gain access to the inner workings? Any help is greatly appreciated in this matter. My extended warranty covers the "motor" but not the problems I have. Thanks again

The door panel is held by 7 (i think 7) plastic poppers. Start by removing the bottom (pull out) of the panel 1st. After the bottom is out push in and slide the door handle bezel out. Behind the bezel is 2x torx (T28 maybe) screws. remove those screws and continue to pop out the remaining clips working from the bottom on up. To very top of the door panel is held by 4 metal clips and the door lock. Unscrew the door lock lift pin cover (very fine thread so takes a few turns lol). Once the lift pin cover is removed pull out ward at the top of the panel (keeping the metal clips attached to the door frame). Unplug (there's about 6" of wire) the window motor harness from the door and "gently place the panel some where where it wont get stepped on or scuffed.

(approx work time from this point: 30-45mins per window)
The window motor fails rarely! (5%)
80% of the time the trouble is with the plastic sliders. (Order 'em from bavauto.com @ 2$ ea)
15% of the time its the window lift assem. If this is the case the lifts run about 80$ shipped and you should change out the plastic sliders while your in there.
You will need:
Long nose needle nose pliers (w/ 45* angled tip if possible)
Lithium grease (thicker the better)
13mm socket
10mm socket
Gloves (unless u like your hands stained from the bmw red "shit" grease)
If it's the lift assem or motor you'll need
A cordless drill
a 1/6" or 1/4" metal (steel) drill bit
(per door) 6x 1/4" long machine screws w/ matching lock nuts. The least amount of legth the better.

You need a drill cause the genious' over at bmw thought it be a good idea to rivet the motor and lift assem to the door frame, so the rivets have to be drilled out to remove 'em.

Hope this helps bro.... It sounds worse than it is. After you do your 1st window... the second is a breeze.

I cannot thank you enough mrinfinit3 for the heads up on the door panel removal and the additional window information! I have done this kind of repair on some GM cars in the past. I did not want to screw up my door panel trying blindly to remove it.Your instructions will make a huge difference with this repair. Also thanks for the heads up on where to get the replacement parts for it .I will get back on here to let you know how it went. Thanks again!

NO problem about the door panel

My appologies on the motor assem. I forgot that they changed it in mid year 98. IN your 99' the sliders are part of the entire Regulator assembly since bmw converted it to a cable driven unit. I don't blame 'em the old gear driven units were strong enough to cut an arm in half. Ive bent 3 door chasis so far.
The part # (bav auto) are:
Window Regulator - Left Front
Part # : 51 33 8 252 393
Window Regulator- Rear Right for 528i From Production 3/1999
Part # : 51 35 8 252 430

The rear one is insainely priced tho... YOu may wanna hit up bimmerforums.com for someone who is maybe parting out their car. Bav auto wants-240$.. YOu may be able to find it on ebay for abit less as well.

Also pick up a few of these:
part#51 41 1 973 500
Door Panel Clip
$0.95 ea

They break very very easy.
